For two years I had the luxury of living close to the sea. Like so many others, I was enthralled by it. I was enthralled by its protean beauty and its many moods, and by how it gave us food, livelihood, and recreation. I was also appalled by its vastness, its apparent indifference, and its capacity to annihilate us – as a non-swimmer, the last feeling was particularly acute. So, I decided to start photographing it.
The resulting series, entitled “Maritime”, is a work in process. I began it in Nova Scotia, and added slightly to it in British Columbia, England and Ireland. More will follow as I travel again to the sea – and as I continue to work out my own very ambivalent emotional relationship to it.
